Well, here it is. Someone in Japan finally snuck in a camcorder into a theater and recorded the Rebuild of Evangelion Trailer. This is the Trailer for the first of four new Eva movies which are a cinematic retelling of the anime series, with new animation, scenes, and a new character. Here is what is revealed in the trailer:

To start, the following characters are shown in the trailer: Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, Misato Katsuragi, Gendo Ikari, Touji Suzuhara, and if they count as characters, Eva unit 01, and the Angels Sachiel, Shamshel, and Ramiel. Some details of the characters can be revealed by this trailer. just not the new one.  First of all, there are several prominent scenes of Shinji Ikari. The first is him lying down in bed face up with his forearm laid across his forehead. The second shot is him being held up forcefully by Touji. The thrid shot is in a dark area and he is shown turning to the P.O.V. with a frown on his face and headphones in his ears. This scene exhibits a "static-screen" effect. The fourth shot is a bit later, and it shows him surrounded by darkness and a shocked expression on his face, with the "camera" slowly zooming out, also with the aforementioned effect. In the final shot of him, you see Misato smiling and saying something inaudible, to which Shinji simply stares and frowns.

Rei also has several scenes which include her sitting at a desk and looking out the window, her head bandaged and hair blowing in the wind, and her figure in front of the moon. Most of the shots are not of characters, but of action and scenery. You can see CGI buildings rising out of the ground, with beautifully drawn and rendered scenery of buildings, mountains, and power lines. And to accompany all these are the 3 angels. First up is Sachiel. This angel generally looks the same, and you can see it bombarded by missiles streaking through the sky and tanks with booming cannons in a nice action sequence. There is also a short scene where it grotesquely regenerates its head. Shamshel also appears generally the same, but it has some sort of white spindly protrusion coming out from its head, which is oscillating fiercely. Ramiel also looks the same, except it is FUCKING HUGE. Bigger than the mountains it rises up from behind. There are only two scenes of Unit 01, the first one is right at the beginning where itfalls down, the second where you can see it hunched over and trudging with a fiery atmosphere surrounding it.

The movie clips retain that old "Evangelion style" of near-futuristic urban scenery, which many of the clips portray beautifully. There are a few shots with a static-screen filter covering them, which appears reminiscent of animes like Paranoia agent. This is extremely noticeable in the scene where Shinji is surrounded by shadow. You can really tell that the animation is upgraded. However, there are many very brief scenes where it is hard to tell what is going on. The fact that the video is poor quality doesn't help much either. Some of these include a bright explosion and a streak of light in the sky (second impact?), someone's hands picking up a small, black and title-less book (Bible?), and a pair of two people's hands holding, with one having a red jacket sleeve (Misato?). This scene is right after Misato says something to a sour-looking Shinji, so it might be them.  

Overall, the trailer is a nice little treat, but it brings up more questions than it answers. Smooth move, Anno...
