Once again, Gamestop helps me out to bring you a (long-belated) preview of Sony's Playstation 3.
Unlike the Wii, the PS3 looked smaller than I expected when I first saw it.
The console is sleek, black, and shiny.
The menu interface is nearly identical to the PSP's, with the same horizontal bar with vertical drop downs.
Nevertheless, it has a very self-aware sense of cool.
So, it's got looks. How about the games?
I got a chance to play both Motorstorm and NBA 2K7 in my time with the console.
(Ironically, the first game I every played on the Wii was Exite Truck, while the first game I ever played on a PS3 was MotorStorm, both offroad truck racers)
MotorStorm was nothing special gameplay wise.
It controlled well, and the tracks were fun and challenging.
Graphics were fantastic on the console in general, though they were more noticeable in MotorStorm.
They were equal in detail if not higher than most Xbox 360 games with high-res textures and very realistic lighting.
One of my main complaints with HD is and will always be the choppyness of the pixels.
Just like when I played the Wii, the PS3's graphics were horribly hurt by choppy ends of pixels on the screen.
This is bad news for anyone playing HD games on a smaller HDTV, since this problem is most noticeable on small HDTVs playing 360/PS3 games.
Furthermore, the game used very obviously flat backgrounds, which really took away from the realism.
NBA 2K7, however, was not a fun experience.
The graphics were average for current-gen (yes that means Wii/360/PS3 now)
On top of that, by either a bad design move, my stupidity, or an act of the heavens, I could not for the life of me figure out how to grab the ball at the beginning of the game.
I left the store with a 10-year-old kid looking at me like I was some weirdo, with my head bowed in true gamer's shame.
