Neon Genesis Evangelion is an epic anime and manga that has influnced and impacted the vast group of indivicuals who have seen it. The story follows a teenage boy, Shinji Ikari, who struggles to maintain stableness within himself throughout his lifetime. The story begins when Shinji is forced to pilot a huge mech to save humanity in a post-apocalyptic world. These mechs are known as Evangelions and their purpose is to destroy monsters known as Angels who arrive in Tokyo-3 from the heavens. These Angels do not take any specific form, but there is a total of eighteen of them. As the story continues, the various Eva (short for Evangelion) pilots continue to fight and defeat each Angel from acquiring their goal, to create an apocalyptic explosion to destroy humanity. The number of Eva pilots is always changing, usually for the worst outcome.

Have I lost you yet? No? Then believe me, you will get confused. The story is completely complex and still, after approximately four years of watching the series, I still cannot understand everything that occurs in the series. Each character has to deal with emotional breakdowns during the course of the storyline and the general theme of depression is apparent. Also, the series is packed with religious symbolism and references. The story tends to stay on track, but with the immense amount of flashbacks, it can get a bit overwhelming. In one of the later episodes, the setting takes place entirely in the past with no reference to the events occurring in the present.

The animation is crisp and flows, but there is still some flaws in it and sometimes you can obviously tell when they use frames over again. The background images are fairly simple, but the details in the character’s suits, the Evas, and even the NERV base. The voice variety in the sub and the dub is really exceptional and you can tell that these voice actors really got into character. One of the most catchy songs in the series is ”Zankoku na Tenshi no Tēze” or literally “Thesis of a Cruel Angel”, the theme song. Other songs in the series aren’t really up to par to this masterpiece.
